Letter from the Chair

Elizabeth Mead

I write to extend a warm welcome to all our alumni and friends!

There is much to tell you about all we have accomplished in the department this past year and even more to tell you of the exciting events coming up this year.

Thanks to the generosity of our anonymous donor the Department of Art and Art History Distinguished Lecture Series allows us to continue to bring exciting and stimulating artists, art critics, theorists and art historians to campus. Last year we were treated to the prolific photographer Duane Michals and the thought-provoking critic Walter Benn Michaels.

Already this fall the renowned American potter Michael Simmons shared his work with us and we will look forward to Timothy Morton, who will share his work on object-oriented ontology and its relation to ecological concerns in January.

Congratulations and thanks to Professor Alan Braddock, who as recipient of a grant from the Commonwealth Center for Energy and Environment and the Committee on Sustainability, has arranged on Thursday, Oct. 15, 7pm for artist Sue Coe to deliver a lecture in Tucker Theatre and on Friday, Oct. 16, 2-4pm, for Sue Coe and Professor Brian Kreydatus to conduct a printmaking workshop/demo at the Matoaka Studios. Coe's paintings and prints are frequently auctioned as fundraisers for a variety of progressive causes.

In addition to being exceptional teachers our faculty are garnering recognition around the world as well as here at home. Professor John Lee was awarded Best in Show at the Charles Taylor Art Center's Artists Who Teach Exhibition 2015. Congratulations to Professor Charles Palermo on the publication of Modernism and Authority: Picasso and His Milieu Around 1900. Professor Cristina Stancioiu was awarded the Franklin Research Grant from the American Philosophical Society, allowing her to conduct research in Crete and Rhodes. Eliot Dudik, our photographer, was chosen as the Virginia ambassador for Lenscratch's States project.

In celebration of the International Year of Light, Dudik and our architect, Ed Pease, worked with students in photography and architecture on the design and construction of a camera obscura that will move about campus throughout the year. Keep an eye out for this exciting phenomenon!

We also celebrate this year the Thirteenth W&M Faculty Show at the Muscarelle Museum of Art, which will be on view until the 17th of January.

Pedro Cruz Freire, a doctoral student in Art History from the University of Seville, Spain, is a visiting scholar in Art and Art History this fall. Pedro was awarded a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Culture to visit William & Mary, where he is collaborating with Professor Susan Webster.

Our students continue to do amazing work in the world. Congratulations to Zoe Powell who was awarded the prestigious Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship for her work in ceramics.

Our Homecoming brunch Saturday, Oct. 24, for alumni and friends will commence at 10am with a special reception for the Class of 1975 beginning at 9am. The location will be our foyer in Andrews Hall, surrounded by an exhibition of work by our seniors.

Renovations for our new photography lab in Andrews Hall will be underway soon. As we continue to move forward with our new program, I'll keep you up to date and invite your continued involvement. For now, I hope to see you all at our alumni brunch on Homecoming weekend.

As always, we'd love to hear your news!

All best wishes,

Elizabeth Mead, Chair and
